Richard Olson Purchases The Bob Cook Yellow Kid Collection

In an unexpected development, Richard Olson purchased Bob Cook's Yellow Kid Collection on Friday, 14 February 1997, in Arp, TX. Rich and Bob celebrated the transaction that night with their traditional rib dinner at The Country Tavern in Kilgore, TX. The fun ended and the work began in earnest the next morning, however, when the two friends packed the entire collection into Olson's car, barely leaving him enough room to get in and drive home.

The collection is still packed and fills Olson's loft, where it will be integrated with his own collection. Because there was surprising little duplication in the two large Yellow Kid collections, the merger created an amazingly comprehensive collection. Duplicate pieces will be available to collectors in the weeks ahead, and interested parties should contact Richard Olson at the address at the bottom of the page.

The Yellow Kid Cigar Cards

One of the rarest and most beautiful Yellow Kid collectibles is the set of twelve numbered cigar cards (4 3/8" x 7 3/4") published by Kerbs, Wertheim, and Schiffer in New York, the manufacturers of The Yellow Kid Cigar. Apparently made to be inserted over a row of cigars as a premium, this numbered set of cards uses virtually the same art found on the Yellow Kid sand pail. Each card is signed R.F. Outcault and was published by permission of The New York Journal under RFO's 1894 and 1896 copyrights. Color reproductions of the entire set of twelve cards are featured in this issue, which contains a total of seven pages.
